Dwight Holmes
Triptych 1976
Dwight Clay
Holmes (1900-1986)
Early Texas Painter
The above three images where made
on my first visit to San Angelo which was in 1976. I came over from
Big Spring to check out a camera store I had learned about that sold
used view camera equipment and was driving down Sherwood Way. I saw
a paint palette on a tree and I knew I had to stop and photograph
it. During this stop I made all three images at 2401 Sherwood Way.

Number 3 in Triptych
I did not disturb Mr. Holmes at
the time because I needed to finish my business here in town and
then drive back to Big Spring that same day. As far as I know he
never knew I had photographed him and his studio. I moved to San
Angelo later in 1976 and stopped by and talked to him and I remember
him as a gentle and interesting man.
The first image in this triptych is the door
going into his studio; the second is an image of him through his
large glass window with him setting at an easel working on a
painting; and the third image is a
paint palette on a tree in front
of his studio all made in 1976.
His studio
is no longer on Sherwood Way and he died in 1986. I have never offered
these three images together before as a group. When you matt and frame
all three
they will make a great collection of a part of San Angelo in the past and
over 40 years ago.
