Joseph Nicéphore Niépce the first photographer made the first photograph in 1826 at Chalon-sur-Saône, France. His process which he called “Heliography” was later improved by the French artist, Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre. For a very good overview including the image click here. The world’s earliest-known, permanent photograph was made on a polished pewter plate coated with bitumen of Judea.
It is not much to look at because I have seen it but it is part of the beginning. I will probably not look great after 183 years either!
The Harry Ransom Center is a research facility that you can use after you register and go through some training on how to handle the objects in the collection. You heard me correctly you can hold and look at many of the fine books, original prints and more that are part of the collection. What a great resource and the staff are friendly, after all it is Texas.
