It all began in 1969 in Arles, in southern France. On the initiative of Lucien Clergue, a small group of photography enthusiasts gathered that summer for an informal exchange of ideas and images – the “Rencontres” was born. From year to year, these meetings became more popular and more sizeable, but it was not until the Mois de la Photo in Paris and FotoFest in Houston during the 1980s that the photography festival in its current form emerged – an event both for a wide audience and for the experts.
The Houston model is the one that has mainly asserted itself worldwide, not only because of its consistently international quality and thematic direction, but also because of the inauguration of the “Meeting Place,” which brings together in efficiently organized “Portfolio Reviews” the image-makers and image-takers. The list provides an overview of 43 of the most important international photography festivals based on a survey undertaken in December 2008.
