What makes a master of photography:
Intention
|
The photographer’s purpose and aim in the pursuit of his medium, his motive, plan, design, ambition, and desire. |
Invention
|
The photographer’s conception, originality, inventiveness of style and technique. |
Craftsmanship
|
The photographer’s skill, art technique and procedure in his approach to his medium. |
Contribution
|
The photographer’s art of contributing and donating to the historical and pedagogical areas of the medium. |
By Allan Porter as printed in Camera Magazine.
I first read the above in the late 1970’s and have always thought highly of the definition and what it embodies.
Intention – Invention – Craftsmanship – Contribution
Notice the question was not what makes a professional photographer, portrait photographer, wedding photographer, commercial, fashion, family, advertising, landscape, baby, studio, senior, child, nature, event, product, corporate, architectural, location, editorial, black and white, color, digital, contemporary, famous, fine art, or any other type of photographer. A master of photography is not the same even though any of the above may be a master of photography.
