My favorite photography magazine of all time!

 Camera Magazine

My favorite photography magazine of all time was the now out of print Camera Magazine of Lucerne, Switzerland (1922-1981). A beautiful sheet-fed gravure printed magazine published in several languages!

Each issue was more like a book and always had very high quality printing, reproductions and paper. It was common to see two different types of paper in an issue and sometimes more than two. It was like the publisher said with each issue, “what is the best way we can show this work or article and who cares about the cost.”

The only issues I know are the editions with Allan Porter as the editor from December 1965 on. It was not a low cost magazine to subscribe to here in the USA but wow it was beautiful with very good coverage of the main photographers of the day and insightful articles. It did have ads but they were high quality also.

It was delivered in a heavy cardboard envelope to protect each issue. We will probably not see another lavishly produced photography magazine like this again. To put a guess price on the magazine today I would say around $200 per year for 12 issues.

I would recommend to a friend to subscribe to the magazine but I know my friend might not be able to afford it today? For that matter I am not sure I could either.
